At Lockheed Martin, our commitment to sustainability extends to the communities where we operate. We developed goals aligned with four of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) with underlying targets that relate to Lockheed Martin’s mission and values. Our goal is to double our financial support to organizations that support these specific targets by 2030, including:
Supporting Sustainable Development
Progress toward this goal is tracked through charitable contributions across Lockheed Martin and research to identify organizations that support the selected UNSDGs. Organizations selected are then presented to our Charitable Contributions Committee, which consists of senior leaders from across the corporation, including business area representatives and our Chief Sustainability Officer. Opportunities selected are then managed through our existing formal corporate contributions policies and processes.
In 2022, we collaborated with our Finance team to centralize data on sponsorships and charitable contributions across all four business areas. We evaluated each organization receiving support using the four selected UNSDGs and a standard set of criteria to avoid double counting. We also ensured that the organizations considered had a clear development-oriented mission. In 2022, Lockheed Martin provided approximately $14 million in support of U.S. based organizations that supported Quality Education; Peace, Justice, Strong Institutions; and Affordable and Clean Energy.
Accelerating Decarbonization in Partnership with Rocky Mountain Institute
In 2022, we expanded our financial contributions to include an organization that supports the UNSDG Affordable and Clean Energy goal. We partnered with Rocky Mountain Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainability, with a special focus on energy and resource efficiency innovation that supports decarbonization. Lockheed Martin has pledged $750,000 to a program that will develop four grid-tied battery energy storage systems in India to support the integration of renewable energy in the country and accelerate decarbonization of its energy grid.
